Summary
Rabbits can be vaccinated against infection with T. pisiformis using antigens collected during in vitro cultivation of larval stages. The antibody and cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses to these antigens were followed in rabbits infected with T. pisiformis or vaccinated with “culture” antigen. Antibody levels rose rapidly to a peak at about two weeks after a 1° infection and then fell slowly; there was an anamnestic response following 2° infection. Antibody could not be detected in vaccinated rabbits, but these rabbits responded anamnestically following challenge infection. CMI, measured by in vitro lymphocyte transformation and by delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions, developed slowly in infected rabbits, reaching its maximum 6 weeks after infection. Skin reactivity was a more sensitive indicator of infection than in vitro lymphocyte transformation. CMI in vaccinated rabbits was similar in degree to that found in lightly infected animals. Heavily infected rabbits showed high levels of in vitro lymphocyte reactivity but were negative to skin testing.
