Copper and zinc in vineyards of Central Portugal

Abstract

The levels and distribution of Cu and Zn in the soil of two vineyards of Central Portugal were measured. The results show that accumulation of Cu is in good agreement with the estimated amount of Cu applied in fungicides. The levels of total and extractable Cu are highest in the surface layers and decrease with depth. A study of the root distribution of the vines in two well characterized soil profiles show that intermediate Cu concentrations occur in the layers where the more active part of the root system develops. For Zn, it was found that no significant accumulation occurred, probably due to the more recent incorporation of this metal in fungicides.

The influence of fungicide treatment on the nutrient content of the leaves and the must was studied following eight annual treatments using products with and without Cu. The results of leaf analysis show that the history of treatment should be known when evaluating the soil micronutrient status through foliar analysis.
