Summary
The concentration of glucose in the hemolymph was analysed after injection of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamin = 5-HT) and extract of eyestalks which were applied over a wide range of concentration.
In animals which are intact the hyperglycemic response after injection of extract of eyestalks is linear if plotted against the logarithm of extract concentration. There is no difference in the response between intact and eyestalkless animals.
The response after the injection of 5-HT follows a saturation curve in intact animals; maximal values of blood sugar are much lower than those obtained with extract of eyestalks. In eyestalkless animals 5-HT has no hyperglycemic effect. Adrenalin elicits hyperglycemia in intact animals only if applied hundredfold more concentrated than serotonin.
Reserpin has no hyperglycemic effect. Methysergid and Dihydroergotamin did not antagonize 5-HT-action, the latter being itself hyperglycemic. Dopamin did not have any effect.
Hyperglycemia induced by 5-HT essentially seems to be eyestalk-mediated. In addition this is confirmed by the findings that there was no remarkable difference in the time course of the hyperglycemia after the injection of 5-HT and extract of eyestalks and that there was no difference in the relation of glucose to total anthron-positive substances in both cases.
A possible physiological role of serotonin as a releaser of hyperglycemic neurosecretion is discussed.
