Zusammenfassung
Eine Seitenorgangruppe von Xenopus besteht aus 2–12 Sinnesknospen. Eine Sinnesknospe ist aus Mantel-, Stütz- und Sinneszellen aufgebaut. Jede Sinneszelle trägt ein etwa 40 μ langes Sinneshaar.
Die Sinneshaare sind von einer etwa 100 μ langen fahnenförmigen Cupula umgeben.
In einer Sinnesknospe gibt es zwei Typen Sinneszellen, die spiegelbildlichen Feinbau zeigen. Jeder Typ wird sehr wahrscheinlich von einer der beiden 8–18 μ dicken afferenten Nervenfasern innerviert.
Die „dünnen“ Nervenfasern geben weder in der Ruhe noch bei Reizung der Sinneszellen Impulse ab. Vermutlich handelt es sich um efferente Bahnen.
Es wird ein Strömungsapparat beschrieben, der es gestattet, ein Seitenorgan von Xenopus mit einer konstanten, laminaren Wasserströmung zu reizen.
Eine Organgruppe hat eine mehr oder minder steile Richtcharakteristik: Durch einen Wasserstrom rechtwinklig zur Organgruppe, parallel zu der Breitseite der Cupula, werden die Sinneszellen der einen Nervenfaser maximal gereizt, die der anderen maximal gehemmt. Bei entgegengesetzter Anströmung verhalten sich die Fasern umgekehrt.
Die Impulsfrequenz einer Nervenfaser ist bei gleichen, niedrigen Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten eine annähernd sinusförmige Funktion des Anströmungswinkels.
Die Impulsfrequenz einer Nervenfaser bei Beginn eines Reizes ist proportional dem Logarithmus der Strömungsgeschwindigkeit.
Die Mechanik der Cupula-Ablenkung wird diskutiert.
