Summary
We report the derivation of Aspergillus niger strains having a lower standard deviation in citric acid production by the use of 60Co gamma radiation and by the parasexual cycle. On the basis of the results obtained by isolating diploids and segregants, diploidization seems to be sufficient for reducing variability. The implications of these results in terms of improvement of industrial strains are discussed.
