Drought Stress: Involvement of Plant Hormones in Perception, Signaling, and Response

Plant Hormones and Climate Change

Abstract

In natural environments, plants are continuously facing fluctuations in the environmental cues. Therefore, to enhance their survival, they should increase their ability to promptly respond to the ever-changing environment. Drought is the most challenging environmental stress for crop development and productivity. Drought tolerance/sensitivity of plants depends on the phytohormone homeostasis and cross talk between them. Antioxidant machinery, compatible solute, ion homeostasis, biomass allocation to different organs, and so many other factors are influenced by the phytohormone status of the plants. Although regulatory roles of auxin, cytokinins, ethylene, polyamines, jasmonates, and salicylates on drought tolerance/sensitivity have been reported, ABA attracted special attentions due to its role in stomatal closure. ABA functions as an endogenous signal when changes occur in the environmental cues and modifies diverse physiological and developmental responses accordingly, which results in adaptation to the stress conditions. In this chapter, the role of different phytohormones (with special focus on ABA) in drought stress responses of plants is discussed.
