Molecular Aspects of Bud Dormancy in Trees

  • Chapter
Molecular Biology of Woody Plants

Part of the book series: Forestry Sciences ((FOSC,volume 64))

Abstract

Dormancy is a survival strategy that enables plants or plant parts to persist periods that are unfavorable for growth. It assures a seasonally synchronized growth through seed dormancy in annual and perennial plants and through bud dormancy in trees, shrubs and perennial herbaceous species. Furthermore, dormancy can be imposed upon plant organs to synchronize the growth of different organs and to control their architecture advantageously for survival and growth. In trees, the activity of the bud determines not only the extent of seasonal growth and dormancy, but also growth habit and tree form. In this respect, dormancy has a morphogenetic function. Because bud dormancy can be imposed for both morphogenetic and adaptive reasons, trees can adapt to a wide range of growth conditions.
