Abstract

The experiments described below were carried out on muscle spindles isolated from the tenuissimus muscle of the cat hind leg and illustrate the physiological behaviour of three types of intrafusal muscle fibre called the ‘dynamic bag1 fibre’ (Db1) the ‘static bag2 fibre’ (Sb2) and the ‘nuclear chain fibres’ (Ch).The same three types of intrafusal fibre are found in primate spindles, including those in man, which differ only in minor respects from those in the cat. Details of spindle morphology in rat, cat, baboon and man are available elsewhere (Barker 1974; Boyd & Smith, 1984; Boyd & Gladden, 1985).
