Abstract

Cognitive processes can be characterized by the ability to generate pragmatic information. This is not the case for algorithm-like processes. This distinction leads to some characteristics of the pragmatic information and of the interaction between systems and information. It is argued that there can be found some complementarity relations both for the pragmatic information as for the system behaviour as well, i.e.: behaviour versus structure, autonomy versus reliability, novelty versus confirmation. It is further hypothized that these complementarity relations have the same formal structure as the quantum mechanical complementarities. To show this for the complementarity pair behaviour/structure a short formalism is developed. Cognitive processes are shown to have such complementarities whereas algorithmical processes like artificial intelligence procedures are believed to remain within the the classical domain.
