Calcium and calmodulin distribution in the tapetum of Gasteria verrucosa during anther development

The Tapetum

Part of the book series: Plant Systematics and Evolution ((SYSTEMATICS,volume 7))

Abstract

Calcium and calmodulin are present in the tapetal cells during anther development in Gasteria. The highest levels of calcium and calmodulin are shown during the microspore stage just when the microspores show a decrease in calcium and calmodulin content. The calcium and calmodulin levels in the tapetal cells decrease at young pollen phase coinciding with an increase of calcium and calmodulin in the cytoplasm of young pollen. It is postulated that the tapetum stores and supplies calcium during anther development. Trabeculae formation (wall thickenings in the endothecium) is also marked by the presence of calcium.
