Part of the book series: The Mycota ((MYCOTA,volume 2))

Abstract

The Homobasidiomycetes include several valuable commercial crop species as well as agriculturally important ectomycorrhizal species. These fungi are often poorly characterised or intractable to genetic analysis. Strategies for strain improvement can best be developed by exploiting knowledge gained from the study of model species that are easy to cultivate and manipulate, and for which the genetics is well established. The two species that have become important models are Coprinus cinereus and Schizophyllum commune. This review looks mainly at the techniques developed for studying C. cinereus, but many of these will be readily adaptable for other species. [C. cinereus (Schaeff, ex Fr.) S.F. Gray has been variously described as C. lagopus, C. fimetarius and C. macrorhizus f. microsporus Hongo (North 1990)].
