Micropropagation of Eucalyptus

High-Tech and Micropropagation V

Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 39))

Abstract

In the past two decades, numerous studies have been conducted on the in vitro propagation of Eucalyptus species (see reviews McComb and Bennett 1986; Le Roux and van Staden 1991; Hartney and Svensson 1992; Curir et al. 1995). Interest in the culture of these species has been for horticultural, ornamental, conservation and especially forestry purposes (Lubrano 1988). Until about 40 years ago, it was often said that it is not possible to propagate Eucalyptus vegetatively (Pryor and Willing 1963). Since then, not only has propagation been possible using traditional methods such as cuttings, air-layering and grafting, but techniques for micropropagation have developed to such an extent that they can now be considered as an essential part of most tree-breeding programs (Hartney and Svensson 1992). The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the recent literature regarding the micropropagation of Eucalyptus in an attempt to determine current trends and to determine the feasibility of using this technique as a tool to supplement the commercial propagation of this species.
