Zusammenfassung
Vor dem Hintergrund eines deutlichen Anstiegs von Fettleibigkeit und Übergewicht in den USA seit den 1970er Jahren untersuchen Nicholas Christakis und James Fowler in ihrem Aufsatz die Verbreitung von Fettleibigkeit in einem eng zusammenhängenden sozialen Netzwerk. Sie greifen dabei auf Daten zurück, die im Rahmen der als Längsschnitt angelegten Framingham Heart Study (FHS) von 1971 bis 2003 erhoben wurden. Ausgangspunkt waren 5 124 Personen (» Egos «) aus der so genannten » offspring cohort « der FHS, von denen Informationen über ihre persönlichen Kontakte (» Alteri «) erhoben wurden. Insgesamt waren 12 067 Personen (Egos und Alteri) zu irgendeinem Zeitpunkt im Erhebungszeitraum miteinander verbunden und damit Gegenstand der Analyse.
