Radiopathology of Organs and Tissues

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

The effects of irradiation on the tissues of the eye and orbit have been studied intensively ever since Roentgen’s discovery of x-rays. Chalupecky (1897) investigated in animal experiments the effect of x-rays on the cells and tissues of the eye, especially the structures of the anterior segment. Birch-Hirschfeld (1904) demonstrated that the ocular tissues are highly radiosensitive. Amman (1906) was the first to report the development of radiation-induced cataract. Thereafter, numerous publications focused on the problem of radiation cataractogenesis. Other tissues such as the optic nerve and retina were studied to a lesser degree (Rubin and Casarett 1968).
