Abstract
Traditional approaches of hierarchical production planning are based on the aggregation of products: items sharing setups are combined to product families, families with similar demand patterns and inventory cost are aggregated to product groups. Despite of good experience with this concept, its application is limited to large batch production; futhermore, perfect aggregation is impossible.
There are, however, certain developments in production techniques and process organization which facilitate a machine based aggregation in hierarchical production planning: due to the fact that a flexible manufacturing system is capable to process an item completely, it is quite natural to consider the entire system as an aggregated production unit. In this case, production planning reduces to the assignment of items to manufacturing systems, whereas operative control can be separated into inventory planning, routing, and scheduling for distinct systems. Furthermore, it has been shown that the conditions of perfect aggregation are fulfilled in this special case.
A similar approach is suggested by the concept of group technology: layout of equipment and organization of the production process facilitate the combination of machines to separated manufacturing units capable of processing items or complex parts completely. So a hierarchical planning system can be introduced in which aggregate production planning is reduced to the assignment of parts to manufacturing units and their routing between these units; inventory planning and scheduling may be considered separately for each unit.
