Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 150))

Abstract

A characteristic feature of gram-negative bacteria, to which Escherichia coli belong, is the presence of an outer membrane on the external side of the murein sacculus. This layer consists of proteins, lipoproteins, phospholipids, and lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). LPSs of smooth wild-type bacteria, consisting of lipid A, core, and O-specific polysaccharide, are O antigens and those of rough mutants consisting only of lipid A and core are R antigens (Jannand Westphal1975; Jannand Jann1984).
