Abstract

The first clinical case of ventricular assistance by means of a pulsatile pump (Tokyo University type) in Japan occurred in Mitsui Memorial Hospital in 1980. The clinical application of ventricular assist devices (VADs) was performed very infrequently in Japan until 1983; however, since 1984 the number of cases has been increasing year by year, as shown in Fig. 1.
