Abstract

Among the physicochemical methods used to study the macromolecular properties of lignins, light scattering has been considered as one of the most useful. It is a convenient method for deriving several parameters such as the weight-average molecular weight, \( \bar M_w \), the second virial coefficient, A2, and the z-average root mean square radius of gyration 〈s2〉z, of polymers in solution. The method is also probably the most suitable for determining the actual shapes of molecules. Furthermore, light scattering data have often been used for the estimation of polydispersity and also as a means of determining microtacticity.
