Abstract

Thioacidolysis, that is, solvolysis in dioxane-ethanethiol with boron trifluoride etherate, is an acid-catalyzed reaction which results in the depolymerization of lignins. The method may be used to estimate the amount and compositon of uncondensed alkyl aryl ether structures, with the exception of methyl aryl ethers (methoxyl substituents in lignin), and of several minor structural types in both isolated and in situ lignins. The detection of C6C3 trithioethyl phenylpropane compounds in the thioacidolysis of a plant material provides unambiguous evidence for the occurrence of arylglycerol aryl ether structures, the most characteristic ones in lignin. On this basis, thioacidolysis may be viewed as a diagnostic test for the presence of lignin where other chemical or spectroscopic methods fail for lack of specificity or sensitivity, respectively.
