The Dopaminergic and Glutamatergic Systems in Schizophrenia

Abstract

It is now well established that there is a proliferation of central dopamine D2 receptors in postmortem brains of schizophrenic patients (Seeman 1987; Toru et al. 1988). However, controversy persists as to whether these changes are due to chronic neuroleptic drug treatment, which itself enhances B max values of D2 receptors (Owen et al. 1980; Mackenzie and Zigmond 1985). To pursue this question we investigated the time course of D2 receptors after withdrawal of chronic neuroleptic treatment in human postmortem brain tissue (Kornhuber et al. 1989b). Furthermore, we studied the relationship between binding parameters of D2 receptors and both psychopathology and presence of tardive dyskinesia prior to death.
