Devonian Calcareous Algae from the Dinant and Namur Basins, Belgium

Fossil Algae

Abstract

The area of Devonian outcrops in Belgium is one of those important, relatively small basins which are very complex and from which the ecological variations of the organism and the reefs can be easily deduced. Reef development begins in the Couvinian and continues until the Upper Frasnian. Five types of reefs can be distinguished in the Devonian reef complexes of Belgium (Figs. I and 2, RI to R5). Most of the reefs are developed during relatively stable phases. Mud mounds are developed during transgressive phases (Tsien, 1974, 1975).
