Chemical Communication Within Microbial Biofilms: Chemotaxis and Quorum Sensing in Bacterial Cells

  • Chapter
Microbial Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Abstract

Bacteria obtain a wide range of information from their surrounding environment. This includes physical cues such as temperature and viscosity, inorganic cues such as pH, oxygen and ionic concentration, and various organic chemical cues (Karp-Boss et al. 1996). The successful adaptation of bacteria to changing natural conditions requires that the organism is able to sense and respond to its external environment and modulate gene expression accordingly (Pirhonen et al. 1993).
