Psychosocial Aspects of Oncology

Part of the book series: Monographs European School of Oncology ((ESO MONOGRAPHS))

Abstract

Over the past decade there has been an increasing interest in broadening the scope of evaluation parameters used in clinical research in oncology beyond the traditional indicators of therapeutic success such as prolonged survival, retardation of the disease process and control of major physical symptoms. It has been argued that assessment of the efficacy of cancer therapies requires greater attention to the impact of treatment on the functional, psychological and social health of the individual. While a range of terms have been applied to this expanded evaluation focus, it is frequently subsumed under the heading of “quality of life” research.
