Abstract
There is an imposing array of evidence which indicates that the anterior pituitary is a gland under neural control but lacking a secretomotor innervation. Instead, there is the hypophyseal portal system of veins which provides a specialized vascular link between hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. The first concept was that hypothalamic impulses for the discharge of trophic hormones might be some general synaptic mediators, released from nerve endings into capillary loops of the median eminence and then transported via the portal circulation into the sinusoids of the anterior lobe (Hinsey, 1937; Green and Harris, 1949). Stalk portal vessels and neural lobe portal vessels join the sinusoids in the pars distalis (for ref. see Porter, Hines, Smith, Repass and Smith, 1967). Although the interest has been focused on the stalk portal vessels (Green and Harris, 1949), the posterior lobe hormones were early considered as possible mediators for the release of the tropic hormones. This hypothesis was based partially on certain stimulating effects of the posterior lobe hormones on the adenohypophysis (Martini, 1954; McCann and Dhariwal, 1966).
