Zusammenfassung
Seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre entwickelt sich die globale Reisetätigkeit in einem rasanten Tempo. Damit verbunden sind nicht nur positive ökonomische und soziokulturelle Effekte wie die sozio-ökonomische Entwicklung ländlicher Regionen, die Armutsbekämpfung oder ein besseres Verständnis für andere Kulturen. Vielmehr hat der Tourismusboom der letzten Jahrzehnte viele negative ökologische und soziale Folgen mit sich gebracht, wie ein Ansteigen des Energieverbrauchs und der damit verbundenen Schadstoffemissionen, vermehrte Belastungen durch Müll und Abwasserentsorgung, Flächenverbrauch und Verlust an Biodiversität. Auch negative soziale Auswirkungen wie Werteverlust und Akkulturationseffekte sowie eine finanzielle und sexuelle Ausbeutung der gastgebenden Bevölkerung sind festzustellen.
