Geschlechtsunterschiede bezüglich verschiedener Diagnosen psychischer Störungen des Erwachsenenalters sind seit langem bekannt und sind z. B. auch im DSM-IV dokumentiert (Hartung u. Widiger 1998). So gilt als unstrittig, dass Frauen und auch bereits weibliche Jugendliche eine wesentlich höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit besitzen, an einer depressiven Störung, einer Angststörung, einer somatoformen Störung oder einer Essstörung zu erkranken (Attie u. Brooks-Gunn 1995; Cicchetti u. Toth 1995; Ihle et al. 2000, Kessler et al. 1994; Weissman et al. 1991). Dissoziale Persönlichkeitsstörungen stärkerer Ausprägung und auch Störungen durch Substanzgebrauch sind dagegen vor allem bei Männern anzutreffen (Dishion et al. 1995; Ihle et al. 2000).
