Der Begriff „Wahn“ leitet sich aus verschiedenen indogermanischen und altdeutschen Wortstämmen ab, wobei „wan“ (leer, Vermutung) im Sinne eines falschen Verdachts als wesentliche sprachliche Wurzel gilt. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch ist „Wahn“ im Verb „wähnen“ enthalten, was das Schöpfen eines Verdachtes bzw. eine vermeintliche Erkenntnis zum Ausdruck bringt.
