Water has already become blue oil – commodified, dwindling, yet overused and abused. From a renewable resource, it is being converted into a non-renewable resource like fossil fuels – from a community resource it is being transferred into a privatized commodity – to be traded and sold. The transformation of water into a commodity to be traded for profit is also leading to its overexploitation and its long distance transport. Instead of following the laws of ecology and the hydrological cycle, water is being forced into markets.
