Zusammenfassung
Trauer nach dem Tod eines geliebten Menschen ist ein randständiges soziologisches Thema. Sie wird primär von den Humanwissenschaften Psychologie, Psychiatrie und Medizin bearbeitet. Gemäß der Aussage von Tony Walter »Sociologists never die« sind das Sterben und die damit verbundene Trauer gesellschaftliche Themenbereiche, die in der Soziologie kaum existieren, ganz so, als ob Soziologinnen und Soziologen niemals sterben würden. An dieser Defiziteinschätzung hat sich bis heute wenig geändert (vgl. Schneider 2005: 55). Wenn die Soziologie sich mit Emotionen beschäftigt, dann eher mit Scham, Vertrauen oder Neid. Allgemeine Lehrbücher zur Soziologie der Emotionen thematisieren Trauer nur am Rande (z. B. Flam 2002; Gerhards 1988; Turner/Stets 2005). Die Trauer wird zumeist nur dann erwähnt, wenn Durkheim (1994) als Klassiker der Emotionssoziologie diskutiert und seine Studie Die elementaren Formen des religiösen Lebens vorgestellt wird. Für Durkheim (1994: 532) ist Trauer kein spontaner Ausdruck individueller Gefühle, sondern eine Pflicht und rituelle Handlung, die von der Gruppe auferlegt wird.
