Der Netzwerkbegriff hat Konjunktur. Soziologische Zeitdiagnostiker wie Manuel Castells beschreiben die Gegenwartsgesellschaft als „Netzwerkgesellschaft„ (Castells 2000) und treffen damit den Nerv einer Zeit, in der aktives „Netzwerken“ für Individuen wie Organisationen in Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik Pflicht zu sein scheint. Die Wissenschaftspolitik fördert interdisziplinäre Kooperationsnetzwerke und „Exzellenz-Cluster“, die Wirtschaftspolitik Innovationsnetzwerke. Es ist nur folgerichtig, wenn sich auch die an diesen Prozessen stets beteiligten Organisationen zunehmend den Mantel der „Netzwerkorganisation„ umhängen, unter dem das Verhältnis von Markt und Hierarchie neu justiert werden soll (Podolny/Page 1998; Powell 1990). Im vorliegenden Beitrag geht es allerdings nicht um die Frage, inwiefern Netzwerke als ein neues Strukturmerkmal zeitgenössischer Gesellschaften und Organisationen verstanden werden können. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Netzwerk und Organisation soll vielmehr unter dem Gesichtspunkt einer spezifischen Forschungsmethode – der soziologischen Netzwerkanalyse – hergestellt werden. Ein solcher Zugang behauptet nicht, dass Organisationen heute mehr als gestern aus Netzwerken bestehen. Es geht darum, das analytische Instrumentarium der Netzwerkanalyse zur Beantwortung organisationssoziologischer Fragen zu nutzen. Die Netzwerkanalyse ist damit keiner bestimmten Theorie oder Zeitdiagnose verpflichtet, sondern primär als ein Erhebungs- und Analyseinstrument zu verstehen.
