Abstract

Lung diseases have been observed to be one of the devastating reasons of morbidity and death globally. However, a continuous effort is being done from last many years to determine different unique approaches and techniques for the repair and regeneration of lung injury. Nevertheless, these approaches need to be extensively worked out further in order to effectively manage lung issues like acute lung injury (ALI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and acute respiratory damage syndrome. Among such approaches, the use of mesenchymal stem cells have shown the potential to modulate the defense mechanism of the host that may contribute in facilitating lung regeneration. Similarly, endothelial progenitor cells have also depicted to be beneficial in ALI by decreasing the endothelial damage. Moreover, recent advances advocate the ex vivo lung engineering that has shown promising effects against lung injury. These recent advances in lung regeneration must therefore be harnessed clinically as a therapeutic choice for various lung related diseases. Thereby, there is a great need for a better understanding of fundamental processes that may play important role in lung reparative capacity along with the therapeutic modalities that can depict promising efficacy against different lung injuries contributing clinically for lung regeneration. This chapter will focus on the pathophysiology of lung diseases along with the recent picture of therapeutic approaches for lung regeneration that can contribute effectively for improving morbidity and mortality rates related to lung diseases.
