Abstract
Although the number of careers calling for training and knowledge of STEM topics continue to grow, the presence of STEM education in K-12 is lacking. Therefore, there is a need to broaden the presence of STEM in current curricula. There is also a need for tools and guidelines to help educators in teaching STEM courses. Such tools should engage students in the subject and encourage them to pursue further education and careers in the field. In this paper, we support the use of drones as STEM teaching tools. Drones naturally spark students’ interest, making it easier to engage them in the classroom. Additionally, they can be used to teach a broad spectrum of STEM courses and they allow students to get both hardware and software experience. Our contributions in this paper include (1) a discussion on how drones can be integrated in education, (2) a series of guidelines for educators on how to use drones in their classroom, (3) a detailed description of a five session (15-h) course designed to introduce young students to drones while motivating them to pursue further education in STEM.
