Turning Forty in Analysis

  • Chapter
The Race Against Time

Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Psychiatry ((CIPS))

Abstract

Birthdays have a special meaning for everyone. For the American middle-class child, birthdays are occasions for expanding the sense of personal worth through peer acceptance and family love. Gifts, cakes, and other expressions of love are offered and received as proof of worth. For happy children, the present joys and affirmations matter more than reflections on past or future anticipations.
