Assessment of Depression in Children and Adolescents by Parents, Teachers, and Peers

Abstract

The limitations of self-report measures and interviews with children dictate the need for data from parents, teachers, and peers. Although children may be the best source of information for rating their inner feelings and self-perceptions, most authorities agree that information should be obtained from other sources. Several limitations of self-report measures are noteworthy, each of which underscores the need for input from significant others in the child’s life. Prominent among these limitations are the comprehension of items in self-report scales, the lability of children’s moods, and the need for an ecological perspective.
