Human DR (Ia-Like) Antigens: Biological and Molecular Profile

Abstract

The functions that a cell of the immune system performs may be mediated through particular surface macromolecules. Although specific cell-surface markers are known to be associated with various functionally distinct subpopulations of lymphocytes, the role of these markers in the specific functions of subclasses of lymphocytes remains to be defined. In immunobiology, one of the current “hot” topics is the molecular and structural characterization of cell-surface markers that may mediate specific functions of immune cells. Ultimately, such studies will disclose the molecular basis of these cells’ specialized functions and will allow the correlation of each function with an identifiable cell-surface structure.
