Abstract
The two ovarian hormones, estradiol and progesterone, induce profound morphologic changes in the endometrium. Classic histological techniques enabled detailed description of these alterations very early and extensive studies have permitted the dating of endometrial biopsy and precise pathology (Noyes et al., 1950; Gautray, 1968). According to these studies, the most relevant endometrial changes deal with stromal reorganization; however, more recently, electron microscopic studies have revealed subtle changes in the luminal surface epithelium (for reviews see Borell et al., 1959; Gompel, 1962; Johannisson and Nilsson, 1972; Nilsson and Nygren, 1972; Ferenczy and Richart, 1973; Wynn, 1977).
