Crown Gall: A Model for Tumor Research and Genetic Engineering

  • Chapter
Genetic Manipulations with Plant Material

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSA,volume 3))

Abstract

The purpose of this section is not to give a complete review of all what is known today about Crown gall but to recapitulate some of its principal features. This will be done especially in relation to its possible usefulness as a model for tumor research and to find ways for well defined genetic modification of plant cells (Genetic Engineering). Presumably genetic modification of plant cells is not directly relevant in near future for the improvement of plant species in aid of agriculture but might be an important tool for the study of the regulatory processes involved in differentiation, morphogenesis and uncontrolled growth (tumor induction). Several excellent reviews on the whole field of Crown gall research have appeared and can be used for more detailed information (1, 2, 3).
