Abstract
Ever since the advent of the laser in 1960, there has been considerable interest in optical analogs of the many transient phenomena seen in pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on spin systems. We refer to these phenomena as coherent transient effects and the interest in them is twofold. First, they exhibit very clearly the dynamics involved in the interaction of radiation and matter, and thus can be used to obtain a deeper understanding of this interaction. Second, it is found that the coherent transient effects can be used as a probe to study collisional decay processes in considerable detail as well as to obtain other spectroscopic information.
