Abstract
A number of inorganic compounds and elements are known to have significant effects on tumor development. Certain metals or compounds of metals induce tumorigenesis directly and thus are genuine carcinogens. Others promote the growth of tumors, and hence, must be regarded as inorganic cocarcinogens. A few elements of compounds have benign or anticarcinogenic properties. Selenium, iodine, and possibly arsenic and manganese fall into this group, not to speak of the complexes of platinum and other metals that are about to gain acceptance as cancer chemotherapeutic agents. In the present account, the anticarcinogenic properties, particularly of selenium, or possess carcinogenic, cocarcinogenic, or anticarcinogenic propmally present in foods that may either act as selenium antagonists or possess carcinogenic, cocarcinogenic, or anticarcinogenic properties of their own. The emphasis on selenium appears justified in view of a growing body of direct and indirect evidence that suggests that this trace element will have to be considered in future cancer prevention programs.
