Abstract
Most physicians regard varicella (chicken pox), primary infection with varicella-zoster virus (VZV), as merely a mild infection of childhood. It might even be viewed by some as a prerequisite of normal growth and development, a traditional milestone that almost all individuals have endured and that new generations ought to endure as well. Clearly, however, this is an old-fashioned view. Recent advances in medical treatment such as chemotherapy of childhood cancer and organ transplantation require clinicians and virologists to reassess the impact of this disease today.
