Chloroplast DNA: Physical and Genetic Studies

  • Chapter
Handbook of Genetics

Abstract

This chapter will examine what is known about chloroplast DNA (its physical and chemical properties, functions, and genetic analysis) from studies of algae and higher plants. This subject matter has been brought together for consideration in a book, Cytoplasmic Genes and Organelles (Sager, 1972), which was preceded by two excellent symposia (Boardman et al., 19716; Miller, 1970). Specific aspects have been reviewed in three books (Gibbs, 1971; Stewart, 1974; Birky et al., 1975) and in several review articles (Tewari, 1972; Kirk, 1972; Gillham, 1974; Ellis and Hartley, 1974). The aim of this chapter will be twofold: to bring the subject matter up to date and to provide a framework for further research.
