Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders

  • Chapter
Handbook of Child Psychopathology

Abstract

On first meeting a hyperactive boy, you are likely to be charmed by his outgoing and enthusiastic nature. He looks and behaves like any other child and may even seem especially bright and responsive. It will often take some time to realize that there are serious problems. Some of these children have difficulty settling into or completing tasks and assignments, and they appear dreamy, distractible, and disorganized. Others are forever seeking and exploring, confronting their environments in ways that violate social conventions and place them in harm’s way. Often but not always, defiance and aggression are part of this behavioral brew. The current diagnostic term for this constellation of problems is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and the core characteristics are inattention, impulsivity, and excessive motor activity. The behavioral profiles are highly heterogeneous, however, and there is an ongoing search for subgroups that can be identified on the basis of characteristics, correlates, and course.
