Abstract
Aerogels 1 are extremely porous materials which are usually prepared by supercritical drying of gels. Typical porosities of SiO2 aerogels are in the range of 85% to 98%, and densities as low as 3 kg/m3 have been reported. As a result of the high porosity, they have very interesting physical properties, such as a small index of refraction, a small Young’s modulus, a small acoustic impedance, a small thermal conductivity and an excellent accessibility of the inner surface. They are transparent or translucent, but exhibit Rayleigh scattering in the blue region.
