Involvement of Local Mediators in Blastocyst Implantation

  • Chapter
Endocrinology of Embryo-Endometrium Interactions

Part of the book series: Reproductive Biology ((RBIO))

Abstract

In most mammalian species, the earliest macroscopically identifiable event in the process of blastocyst implantation is an increase in endometrial vascular permeability which is localized to implantation sites (Psychoyos, 1973). In the rat this increase in permeability can be first detected some 20–24 hours before trophoblastic invasion of the endometrium (Psychoyos, 1973). In those species in which stimulation of the uterus results in decidualization, an increase in endometrial vascular permeability precedes the decidualization; depending on the nature of the stimulus applied, the permeability response and subsequent decidualization may be localized or generalized.
