Measurements of the Specific Heat of Liquid and Solid 4He in a Confined Geometry at Low Temperatures

Abstract

We present the results of specific heat measurements in liquid (0.43 and 21 bars) and solid hcp (20.9 cm3/mole) 4He in the temperature range 100 mK to ≈ 2 K. For the case of the liquid, we were interested in studying the effects of a confined geometry and, in particular, if there is a modification of the anomalous phonon dispersion curve.(1,2) For the case of the solid we were interested in extending Cv measurements to lower temperatures than have been reported(3) in order to examine more carefully the persistent question of a “specific heat anomaly” in quantum crystals.(4,5) We also searched for possible signatures of a supersolid state which has been studied theoretically in some detail.(6)
