Structure and Distribution of Glycoproteins and Glycosaminoglycans

  • Chapter
Complex Carbohydrates of Nervous Tissue

Abstract

The glycosaminoglycans (called mucopolysaccharides in the older nomenclature) are high-molecular-weight linear carbohydrate polymers that are generally composed of disaccharide repeating units of a uronic acid (D-gluc- uronic acid or L-iduronic acid) and a hexosamine (N-acetylglucosamine or N-acetylgalactosamine). In the case of the sulfated glycosaminoglycans, the polysaccharide chains are O-glycosidically linked at their reducing ends to a protein moiety through the characteristic -glucuronosyl-galactosyl- galactosyl-xylosyl-serine sequence.
