Energy Trapping and Electron Transfer in Chloroflexus Aurantiacus

  • Chapter
Green Photosynthetic Bacteria

Abstract

Green photosynthetic bacteria are characterized by the presence of chlorosomes, antenna structures attached to the cytoplasmic side of the inner cell membrane. These complexes contain BChl c, d or e and function by absorbing tight energy and transferring it to the photochemical reaction center which is embedded in the cytoplasmic membrane (Olson, 1960). In the reaction center a portion of the photon energy is conserved by a series of electron transfer reactions, and the products of these reactions are used to drive cellular processes.
