Brain Energy Metabolism in Hepatic Encephalopathy

  • Chapter
Hepatic Encephalopathy

Part of the book series: Experimental Biology and Medicine ((EBAM,volume 22))

Abstract

The symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy caused by portacaval shunting (pes) or chronic liver dysfunction in man range from very subtle subclinical abnormalities of intellectual and motor function to coma. Even in the absence of serious symptoms brain function is compromised and is more sensitive than normal to metabolic stresses and sedating pharmacological agents (Hoyumpa et al., 1979; Zieve, 1979).
