Abstract
A 2 kW C02 laser and a 1.5 kW diode laser were used in an experimental study to investigate the basic phenomena in welding 5182 aluminum alloy sheets. The work has shown that both keyhole and conduction limited welds can be achieved with the C02 laser and only conduction limited welding can be achieved the diode laser. The effects of laser power density, welding speed, joint fit-up conditions, shielding gases and surface preparation on the weld quality are reported.
