Abstract
Degassing and deep decarburization of steel in a two-position vacuum-treatment unit in the oxygen-converter shop at OAO Magnitogorskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat is described. That unit went into operation in February 2010. To fulfill orders for pipe steel with specified hydrogen content (no more than 3 ppm in the final steel) and nitrogen content (no more than 0.006%), the minimum vacuum-degassing time is determined, the influence of additions of slag-forming materials and ferroalloys after vacuum degassing on the hydrogen content in the steel is assessed, and the potential of the new vacuum-treatment unit for deep decarburization of steel in natural and forced conditions is demonstrated.
